Amy Kett's Ann Arbor Avon 3 Day PledgePage
I have a grandmother, Memere. She is something else, let me tell you. I remember camping with her in the old pop top camper out at Witch Meadow and playing spoons and picking berries every summer. Until I got too old and too cool for things like that. I remember her dancing at my wedding, tearing up the dance floor, showing us young kids how it is done. Up until this past Christmas she had a more active social life at 81 than I have at 26. She lives with her boyfriend in Florida and knows how to have a good time.
This past Christmas, she was diagnosed with several types of cancer. See she was too busy looking out for everyone else to take care of herself, and when she finally went to the doctor, there was nothing they could do. Ever the fighter, she thought about chemo, but she was already too sick for that. And so we wait. We make sure that she is as comfortable as possible, we tell her that we love her and we wait. But somehow that isn't enough, I want to DO something... And so I am walking. The girl who has been known to watch "When Animals Attack" so she doesn't have to get up and find the remote is walking to Detroit. 60 miles in 3 days. And the girl who lived off Ramen noodles and Faygo in college is going to raise $1,900.00. It's kind of funny, what you will do when inspired. With this walk, we are going to try to raise awareness, so that women can take advantage of the 97% survival rate when breast cancer is caught early enough. Of course, we are also going to try to raise some serious fundage, and that is where you come in... Since 1998 over 31,000 people have participated in Avon 3 Day Walks and they have netted over $115 million. That is NET, going directly to the cause. There are already over 3,800 walkers registered for the walk from Ann Arbor to Detroit this year, some of whom have already raised over $9,000!!! These people are amazing! Now I may be a lot of things, but fundraising guru I am not. Rich, I am definately not. So the call goes out to all we know....HELP!!! As time goes by (and I attempt to figure out how to maintain a webpage...) I will be uploading more pictures and keeping a diary on this page to let you all know what you have gotten yourselves involved in. With help and support from everyone, I should reach my goals in no time. And if anyone feels like driving along the walk route and giving me cookies, that counts as support. But if you wish to donate monetarily, my event is the Michigan 3Day, and my participant number is 1820. If you would like more information, the organizers of the event have an amazing website www.bethepeople.com... So I am doing this for Memere. And every other woman who needs to be healthy enough to dance at their grandkids' weddings. And show the young kids how it's done. |
